Hello everyone.
Right after Christmas, I plan on being retested for TMAU (finally). The first time I was tested, I never really did a choline load. So this time, I want to do it perfectly. So, here's my main question. Would it be overkill to do a choline load during the time of menstruation (sorry for the uncomfortable question, but I really feel that it's important)? I often see that it is recommended to obtain a urine specimen during this time, but I'm worried that if I eat choline-rich foods while I'm going through "that time of the month" I might end up creating a false positive. Does anyone know if this happens? I'm really trying to decide if I should just do a choline load by itself, get the sample right before my period while on my regular diet, or just do both at the same time. Any ideas?

Hey, This might be a good time to do your load as you might have transient trimethylaminuria related to menstruation. I got tested at this time and did a choline load. Even if your odour is not just apparent in the time frame leading up to your period alot of women find controlling their odour at this time more difficult perhaps due to a change in hormones or the possible effect this might have on the FM03 enyzme. I am no expert but I know transient or intermittment TMAU can be more difficult to diagnose so thats why a choine load is so important and if your time around your period is problematic re odour this would actually be a very good time to get tested.

Thank you carebear. I was thinking that I should do this, but I was worried that doing both at the same time could give me a false positive, and that is not something I want to deal with. Were you tested positive for TMAU when you did this?

Paige90,
Where are you being tested? When do you expect to test?
I would not worry about a false positive, so few people actually get a positive result that the chances of this are slim. If anything, if the test comes back positive you could test again with just the choline load to determine if you are possibly borderline or transient. Regardless, you would know wether you are being affected by choline, and can adjust your diet accordingly. There is a video of a woman on YouTube that has transient TMAU, and she controls it with diet the week before her period. If you test negative, I would think it would be harder to get a second test.
Sorry I did not log in to reply Good luck - I hope you get the results you areooking for

Hello gabby. I will be testing with Dr. Manning of Sheffield Children's Hospital. It's a plus for me that he supposedly also tests for secondary TMAU. Thank you for reassuring me about the false positive concern. The problem seems to be at its worst a week before my period. During the actual period, it dies back down (I think I have an odor all of the time, but it's worse during that one week).

Hey I got tested by Dr Manning in Sheffield as well, I didn't actually plan to get tested just before my period it just sort of happened that way but i am glad I did as i think this is when I am most vulnerable to having an unpleasant odour that can be detected by others. My urine sample tested positive for TMAU1 which amazed me as this didn't affect me until my twenties so i still need to have the bloods done for confirmation or else assume that I have TMAU2 or else that i have always had it and it wasn't detectable until a stressful life situation changed me from being quite a relaxed person to a worry wart who became very prone to anxiety and stress and this has exaggerated it, i don't know either way yet. I think the only way you can get a false positive is by having a urinary tract infection at the same time but again I am not 100 per cent sure. I think you should get tested, the few people I told and my Gp were like you don't have that and when i finally got the the results I felt that finally i was right to pursue the problem with all the strength I had. Good luck to you and let me know how you get on. Thinking of you.
