My Success Story
Hello Everyone,
I just thought that I would share my success story with you. Bare with me, as it is really long, and it will go over two posts. This is actually a shortened version believe it or not, but I included it here so that it may help others.
I am a 27 year old female from Australia. I had a fishy odor that came from my vaginal area - sweat glands (not due to lack of personal hygiene,) and in my urine since I was 15 years old (1992). In late 2007, through my own process of elimination, I finally figured out how to control my fish odor.
I started by getting tested twice for Trimethylaminuria (TMAU) because the symptoms that I experienced, and the foods/drugs that triggered off my odor were the same or very similar to TMAU. Both of my urine tests for TMAU came back negative, but there are other conditions similar to TMAU that haven't been named yet or researched. My Mother and Aunt also have a similar odor condition.
Our odor condition is likely to be genetic, because my mother and aunt also suffer from this too, but it had manifested slightly differently in all of us. We all had the fish odor in the vaginal area (comes from the sweat glands, others noticed it especially when we sweat, and I also smell the fish odor in my urine) but we each had additional symptoms as well.
My mother also had problems with halitosis - rotting/garbage odor? She had been to the dentist regularly, used mouthwash and brushed/cleaned her teeth several times a day, which did not help. She also reported that she had a bad odor that came from her body when she used a tanning cream.
My Aunt has also had a faecal odor since she was a child, and also mentioned that when she has used perfumes or laundry powders on her clothing, the odor that comes from her body was really bad. She also mentioned that she sometimes smells like ammonia.
I also suffer from Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. I have always been very sensitive to a wide range of drugs and chemicals (including food, drinks, beauty products, etc)
From about 22/07/2008 - 22/08/2008, I had a whole range of really bad side effects, and felt unwell. I had these symptoms for over a month until I discovered that cause was from the traces of pesticides from the fruit and vegetables that I was eating. Ever since then, my multiple chemical sensitivities have been getting much worse, to the point where I am running out of food and fluids (including water) that I can eat/drink, because they make me unwell. Nearly all foods have chemicals in the ingredients, or are sprayed on them. I get different symptoms/side effects depending on which chemicals I am exposed to. The toxins just build up in my body.
As Arun said a while back, I did have "some kind of disorder of choline metabolism, whether locally or systemically and this is evidenced by the surge in fishy odor after eating choline-rich foods."
I know that taking female sex hormones (such as progesterone and/or estrogen) also have the same effect, and my fishy odor also came back when I took oral contraceptives, and ate soy products (phytoestrogens.)
During menstruation, if I had either been eating choline-rich foods, or taking oral contraceptives, I also had a horrible fishy odor in my menstral blood.
The odor problems go away for all three of us when we take alfalfa or spirulina tablets (chlorophyll), and in my mother's case, probiotics as well. Neither of them changed their diet at all, and just the supplements worked for them. I went on a vegan diet (not to try and reduce odor, but because I didn't want to eat animal products anymore.) I reduced the amount of soy products, stopped including eggs and fish (known triggers for me) in my diet, and stopped drinking or eating anything with caffeine in it (it increased my sweating and odor.)
When I did the combination of taking the supplements and changing my diet, and avoiding any hormonal contraceptives, my fish odor coming from my urine and sweat glands went away, but I also noticed that the fishy odor during menstruation went away as well.
Our odor was detectable by other people (especially when I was menstrating,) but only when other people came close to us, or if we were in a small room with them. It was relatively mild compared to what other people experience with their odor conditions but we still experienced the comments, feelings of shame, humiliation and embarrassment while suffering from this odor condition.

RE: My Success Story
This is the second part of my success story. I had noticed some gradual changes in my body in December 2008, in relation to my fish odor. I am going to try and describe what has happened here in this post.
21/12/2008 My vaginal odor (from the sweat glands) has not come back for several months now, even when eating the known trigger foods.
The day after I had the second test for TMAU (03/12/2008,) I could smell my fishy odor in my urine, but it wasn’t anywhere near as strong as it used to be.
Now the foods that normally trigger off my fish odor still cause my fishy odor (now only in my urine, and in the blood when I am menstruating) but it (whatever the odorous metabolite is) seems to be passing out of my system much quicker now, and it doesn’t seem to build up like it did before, and this is without taking my alfalfa tablets (I had stopped taking them.)
I menstruated not long after I had done all my testing, but because I had eaten all the known trigger foods for the TMAU test, I could smell the fishy odor in the blood.
I am still experimenting and challenging my body, but I seem to be able to eat the foods that trigger off my odor with no major problems now. I continued to eat eggs and cheese after the TMAU test because they were two of the few foods that didn't give me any problems with chemical sensitivities.
30/12/2008 I am still continuing to eat eggs, and soy products, I had caffeine, and I am still not taking alfalfa tablets. Guess what? There is no fishy odor in my urine any more. I can't believe it. The only thing that I haven't tested, is whether I still get a fishy odor when I take oral contraceptives, but I can avoid taking those.
I have stopped eating eggs because I went back on my vegan diet on 01/01/2009. When I menstruate again, I will eat eggs and fish, and soy products. If I can't smell any fishy odor at that time, then I will know for sure whether my odor is truly gone for good or not. I'm hoping it is, but I am just grateful that I was able to even control my odor.
I still think there is still a possible fault in my genes that caused it in the first place though.
Now I am just working on trying to somehow live with my Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. In some ways there has been improvements with them, but I am still becoming sensitive to more foods/fluids. I know that I will eventually recover from this too.

Trimethylaminuria - Alternative Healing!!!
Thank you for reading this. I hope you will find the following information useful. I have been able to heal myself of primary trimethylaminuria within two years of being diagnosed. I used two simple methods simultaneously - POSITIVE THINKING/ AFFIRMATIONS AND SPIRITUAL HEALING (THE INTAKE OF PRANA/ LIFE ENERGY INTO THE BODY). There is no illness which is incurable. Perhaps there is nothing available from a medical point of view but it is within the ability of everyone to restore health if they are focused and determined. It really does require a lot of effort to keep positive while you may still be experiencing symptoms, but if you persevere you will notice the condition will gradually improve. At the beginning i tried to avoid food and drink which would cause the biggest problems for me, reintroducing them gradually in small amounts until there was no odour. I now eat a normal diet without any problems and the most exciting part is that this is permanent! I have listed below all the resources i used to help me heal myself.

I think that this might be what is happening to me as well. After my process of elimination, I avoided the foods that triggered off my odor, then slowly reintroduced them over time.
I think that because my mindset has changed, I always try to think positively now (I never used to) and now there are so many positive things happening in my life. I have always been determined to do what I want in my life, and overcome obstacles. My first obstacle was my fish odor, my second one was my Social Anxiety, the third one was my Multiple Chemical Sensitivities.
The body has the ability to heal itself, and I think that mine is slowly doing that. I still have the genetic component of my odor condition, and when I find out what odor condition I actually have in the future, I can then help others, including my family.
I have changed so much in a short period of time, and now I am so grateful for everything that has happened. My psychologist even said to me that I must have gone through all this pain and suffering for a reason, I've managed for the most part, to turn my life around, and I am using my experiences to help others, which is what I intend to do.

Re: My Success Story
Hi Kristen,
How many of the alfalfa tablets did you take per day and over how many days before you noticed your odor disappearing? Is the alfalfa better than the spirulina? This is sort of exciting because many of the sypmtoms you and your mom and aunt are similar to mine and those of my siblings and mother and some cousins on my mother's side. I think more relatives could be affected but they either don't know it or don't discuss it. I also tested as "probably not affected" on urine testing for TMAU that wasn't done properly and I also have problems with choline-rich foods along with fruits and vegetables and other things, even water. I even checked people on the MSN forum once if anybody else had a problem with water. I want to try the alfalfa or the spirulina. Maybe they will help.
As for disorders similar to TMAU, dimethylglycinuria (DMG) is one. Unfortunately, they don't offer testing for it in the U.S. yet. In the U.K., they do. I don't know if there is some connection but I read that DMG supplements might help those with autism and I also saw a link between asperger's (a "milder" form of autism) and TMAU once. I couldn't that website again recently though.
A new idea I have is that maybe there is a disorder in which we can't break down choline itself. How novel is that? Could explain why many who have problems with choline-rich foods end up testing negative for TMAU. Maybe they should come up with a test looking for choline in the urine (could explain why I have had protein in my urine on more than one occasion) and blood (I had some elevated blood protein levels more than once). I think I may have hit upon something. And another thing that lends support to my idea is that there are other genetic metabolic disorders such as porphyria that have more than one form, each one caused by the process going wrong at a certain stage. So why not for choline metabolism? Could also explain why one sufferer who tested negative for TMAU had undigested proteins in her stool.

Re: My Success Story
I would advise people to be wary of anyone's "success" story. If someone has truly suffered from chronic body odors for so many years, it is highly unlikely (next to near impossible) that taking some supplements and avoiding certain foods has miraculously "cured" them, especially as we don't know what exactly is/"was" causing said odors. I have heard some such stories on this website and other BO communications and at first, I almost believed them. Then I asked around and believe me, if someone is making such claims, either they are lying or they are self-delusional.
Furthermore, before you read such claims and join the bandwagon and buy/try the products/probiotics/antibiotics/supplements mentioned, be very, very careful and wary. Believe me, I know how dangerous that can be. I am "lucky" to be alive after probiotics and antibiotics I tried because of others' suggestions nearly killed me and destroyed my already flagging health. Remember, nobody really knows what is causing the majority of our odors. So, how can anybody supposedly "cure" them/the unknown? Also, before you try alfalfa, you might like to know earlier this year I went out and bought a big bottle after reading this so-called success story. I took a few pills but, thank God, I didn't take any more since I found out from a book I was reading, and not even the supplement manufacturer, that alfalfa contains an amino acid, L-canavanine, which has been shown to cause lupus!!! Since many MBO people personally have or suspect autoimmune disorders and/or have a family history, I would use this incident to illustrate my point: BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL!!! DON'T GO AND BUY THE FIRST THING SOMEBODY SAYS HAS HELPED HIM/HERSELF. Unless you want liver damage and an exacerbation of your underlying odors and the condition(s) causing them. Due to the complex nature of these conditions, any one supplement is highly unlikely to "cure" our problem or to even bring noticeable relief.
Edit: Notice how the orginal poster claimed her odors were cured yet came back. Something that is cured is by definition not supposed to come back. Maybe some people's odors lessen if they take certain steps or because of other factors, such as the weather, hormone levels, etc., but that wouldn't mean that they were cured.

Re: My Success Story
Well I don't think this lady posts anymore to defend her story, however if she thinks she took a number of steps with her lifestyle and they have solved the problem then who are we to argue? Even if the problem remains at a residual level - if it's been improved a great deal and the person is now happy with their life then that is a success story.
Nycegirlx, your comments are largely speculative and negative and you're posts seem largely driven by anger. You're drawing conclusions about somebody's experience from your own guesswork and shooting down one of few success stories, when this community needs hope and encouragement. The supplements were not the only step this person took and maybe they were helpful.
We don't completely understand these problems, however - TMAU is largely understood, we have a number of theories for these problems e.g. dysbiosis liver and enzyme dysfunctions which may well explain this case. It's difficult to make blanket statements for improvement as these problems seem complex and individual and of course they're not really researched properly. What worked for this lady may not work for somebody else. That's not to say we can't experiment with different things based on eachothers advice and see what helps.

Re: My Success Story
I would be wary of people claiming that they've been cured of body odor conditions when taking a miracle drug or supplement, etc., but I don't think this is what Kristen is telling us. I have known Kristen very well for a few years now, and she is the kindest, least selfish person I've ever met. She and her boyfriend, Matt, did all the computer programing for Arun and this community and worked diligently on it for months to make sure we had a place to meet and work things through. Thanks to them, we have this forum. I have never heard one lie or exaggeration coming from her - ever.
We don't know most of the scientific explanation behind what triggers and doesn't trigger odor in different people, so I do believe that Kristen is telling us the truth as she perceives her reality. I'm very happy for her also. She is living a happier life than before. Also, Kristen is not selling us a product for us to suspect that she might be a spammer. She has nothing to gain, and only wants to teach us to calm ourselves and center ourselves into healing. There is much to be said about stress triggers, including the hormone adrenaline and chemical sensitivities that are metabolized by the xenobiotic FMO3 metabolic enzymes, and how much our body is healed when we find inner peace and when we remove the stress from ourselves.
As jcc34 said, everyone is different, and everyone doesn't have the same causes of body odor, but one thing for sure, we can all heal ourselves to a great extent, and even live to an older age, when finding deep inner peace and centering ourselves.
Sadly, modern society believes that we have to wait until our relatively young modern science/medicine explains these healing methods that have worked for millennia to then declare that they exist and from henceforth be validated. Isn't modern science only a couple of hundreds of years old compare to the history of humankind? Does that mean that the universe didn't exist until science declared that it did, or that deep spiritual and mental healing didn't exist because science doesn't yet fully understand them? I strongly believe science is a tool that can help us measure and explain that which has always existed and by understanding it better, perhaps in doing so, gives us the tools to learn to protect it and to heal whatever went wrong. But I do believe that frequently, all science does is validate some old ancient traditions that are much wiser than we may ever be, or to expand on them, especially when it deals with the power of the mind.
In our fast society, we want to resolve everything with a quick pill, but in olden days we had more time to think alot, to meditate more, to center our minds, and to use our minds for self healing. It would take us a very long time to accomplish this in our present fast-moving culture, but I suppose it can be done, as Kristen has done. I personally think that science and mental/spiritual healing together can move mountains. - Just my personal opinion.
