These are the results for the TMAU urine test I did about a year ago without first doing the choline load. At the time my doctor said that it was normal and so I looked at different possible causes for my odour. As this has proved fruitless I recently went to see a different doctor about repeating the test(properly) and about my results in general. He took an entirely different approach, saying that my TMA and TMA-n=Oxide were both on the high side of normal and that I should look to try the TMAU diet for 2 months. Whilst I appreciated that he wanted to help me, I dont think he really knew too much about TMAU. He also was not prepared for me to do the test again, as he considered the high ranges to be red flags for TMAU.
TMA 10.5 (normal range 2.5 - 10.9) TMA-n=Oxide 146 (normal range 17.0 - 147.0) TMA/TMA-n-Oxide 0.07 (normal range 0.05 - 0.21 )
TMA and TMA/Oxide are both high.
But TMA/TMAnOxide is well within the normal limits. My understanding of TMAU is that it is the final variable that is by far the most important, but my own knowledge is fairly limited.
Does anyone have any ideas? Is it worth trying a low choline diet for 2 months?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I do not want to take you off track but wondered if your levels indicate that it might not be tmau causing your odours, have you ever thought about getting a test for SIBO - Small intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth?
This seems to be a problem on the increase and there is a lot of info on the net. Apparently this can cause your body to give off odours and the best form of heaing is through diet. Although some people also need antibiotics as well.
See the Elemental diet, the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, the Gaps Diet and the FODMAPS Diet.
Failing this you could try the low choline diet for a couple of months and see if you get a result - you may find that it is one specificic food type that is causing your problems, such as wheat or dairy or sugar. You might not be absorbing Fructose?
Hope you find an answer to help you.

Alfie, you may also try low sulphur diet. You may get a clue on what your culprit is by different kinds of odor that you give off. Maria posted a link about it recently.
Something interesting about bread, some put "flour treatment agent (E920) which contains L-Cysteine" in bread. That's the reason that my breath smells like dog poop if I eat bread.

Hi to both of you and thanks for the replies.
I had never heard of SIBO before, I think i'll let my doctor know about it should TMAU be found to not be the cause. The low sulphur diet sounds like an option too. If I can try and tick off as many things as possible then I may finally get to the bottom of this.
