Possible Solution, or at least more info
Hello everyone,
I'm a years long lurker (across three sites), but very rare poster. I want to report some recent success I've had in controlling body odor. But first some background info:
This problem began for me in junior high when rivers of sweat began pouring out of my armpits. After many uncomfortable years, I found a partial solution in my final semester of college. The anti-perspirent Certain-Dri (available at Target & CVS) completely eliminated my underarm sweat allowing me to join the workforce with fewer problems than I otherwise would have had. The odor was much less than before but was still noticeable, judging by the people who rubbed their noses around me. I also suffered from "hot flashes" when people came around me that made the odor worse. Since I no longer produced any sweat from my underarms, I assumed that an internal, biochemical defect was the cause of the odor and the "hot flashes" were a manifestation of psychological stress that made the odor even worse.
Well I've been praying about this for the past two years and I received an inspiration just this week. I used Certain-Dri on my entire chest and back. The very next day the odor had decreased or ceased completely judging by people's lack of reaction to me. I attended a staff meeting this week and no one rubbed their noses around me. I still felt the "hot flashes" from being surrounded by people, but they were weak compared to what they had been. I simply felt fresher (or maybe just normal) throughout the day.
The evidence seems to suggest that low levels of sweat (not enough to produce wetness) are the cause of the odor. Certain-Dri shrinks the pores so that sweat isn't produced or at least is produced less. After only a few days of this relief, I still consider the results preliminary. But I am hopeful and prayerful that this is the practical solution I've spent years looking for.
Now for the downside:
Certain-Dri is highly irritating to use initially. I still remember the burning and itching in my underarms from my original daily use of it. Now, years later, I use it only once a month with little irritation. Using it now on my chest and back is even worse than before since I have to use so much of it to ensure full coverage. It causes so much uncomfortable itching that it takes hours longer than normal to fall asleep. Still, it is temporary discomfort and well worth it to finally try to build a normal life.
I know that this disorder manifests differently among those who suffer from it. From what I've read over the years, the sweat and smell of some posters is worse than mine has ever been. I have usually been able to retain a good odor for an hour or two at work and all day on weekends. I hope that any of you who have symptoms similar to mine can make use of what I've written.

Hi Moody,
Congrats on your success! Thanks for sharing this with all of us. Over the years members have noted success with Certain-Dri, as well as Odaban.
These have not worked as well for me as Oxybutinin, but I'm sure some members will be happy to know it's a potential solution.
Cheers

Re: Possible Solution, or at least more info
I've been odor-free for a while now, so I want to post a quick follow up to my previous statement. Certain dri didn't prove to be 100% effective as I originally hoped. Even though it prevents virtually all upper body sweating, it only stopped about 90% of the odor. Of course this was still a great improvement and inspired me to be more proactive in trying to kill the odor completely. While searching amazon for chlorophyll as an odor blocker, I found activated charcoal capsules recommended for odor problems. I purchased them from Vitamin World. The charcoal seems to have neutralized the odor from within. The odor is completely gone now, even when I exercise. After so many years, it all still seems very strange to not have to expect people having negative reactions.
Anyway, I hope this is helpful.

Moody,
Thanks for sharing and very happy to hear of your success.
I remember reading that activated charcoal is part of the TMAU protocol, but you're only supposed to use it for up to 2 weeks because it can interfere with your digestion and absorption of important nutrients - something to keep in mind.

Wow, thanks for telling us your success story Moody. I am especially pleased that you posted it under 'success stories' since some people post their success stories in other threads and they get lost forever!
Can you tell us the dose of the charcoal used and how often you took it? Lataralus is right about the fact that charcoal can stop the absorption of important nutrients though so you will need to keep an eye on this.
Finally, did you want us to add a Hyperhidrosis section to this site? I know MSN Groups had a Hyperhidrosis board but they moved when MSN shut their Groups down. I'm not sure what their new URL is?
Anyway, congrats once again!

Hi lataralus & Arun,
Thanks for providing the warning about nutrient absorption. Do you know where more info about this would be located? I don't know about the two week time limit, since I've already exceeded it.
Each charcoal capsule is 260 mg. I started by taking 9 per day, 3 after each meal, for a couple of weeks. Afterward, I took 2 after each meal. Since reading your warnings, I'm now taking only 3 capsules spread out over the day, a few hours after meals or taking vitamins & supplements.

Arun,
I don't personally need a hyperhidrosis board. I did suffer hyperhidrosis of the underarms, chest, and back. Certain dri has ended that.

Hi I'm new to this site.
My name is angel and I'm a suffer of B O.
I'm confused about this activated charcoal. Since it absorps nutrients, won't the charcoal interfere with the digestion of vitamins and supplements such as vitamin B2 etc....

Re: Possible Solution, or at least more info
Angel, Moody,
Activated charcoal works by adsorbing a whole variety of chemicals or even products of digestion (including smelly ones). The charcoal is not absorbed into the bloodstream but passes out of the stools unchanged. It is also good at removing most chemicals or drugs that have been swallowed so is commonly used in hospital emergency departments to mop up drugs that patients have taken as an overdose. Unfortunately, not only the unwanted drugs or smelly chemicals get adsorbed. Nutrients get adsorbed too so I would make sure to take vitamin and possibly minerl supplements at a different time of day to the charcoal.
To find out more information, I would search the product sheets for activated charcoal tablets.
Bridge, I think you are right. Some products that stop sweating (and the odor associated with it) can actually later increase the odor produced. I think this is reversible though so I think it is reasonable to experiment.

Thanks for the additional information Arun. I am now taking 1 charcoal capsule every 2 days just before bed to avoid any nutritional disruptions. I haven't noticed any problems with this change.
