fao tmau pls answer
I was reading at monell website about tmau and it says underarm odor is not caused by tmau. I have a very strong sour/musty/homeless underarm odor.
Pls answer.
Tnx

Hi Pupung
Have you looked into bromhidrosis? You can google the internet for info on this, but also see posts by Sarafina77 who seems to have found an answer to this problem.

Maureen, yes I am very aware what bromhidrosis is. Unfortunately my bromhirosis can't be controlled by showering or deodorant. I also have fbo.
I do want to know if tmau sufferers have underarm odor as well.
thanks,

I dont think sarafina suggestion is applicable to me. Coz I not only have underarm odor, I have fbo and odor coming from my groin.
Basically I am trying to rule out tmau as one of the causes.

Pupung,
I cannot say that I directly got comments of underarm odor, but the comments ranged from head to toe plus other strange comments. Think of it this way: TMAU seems to accentuate perfumes/cologne/fragrances, so it could be making an underarm odor worse. Also, the strong antibacterial/deodarant soaps used do not wash off tmau no matter how many times you wash, so maybe it is feasible that the buildup would keep an underarm (or groin) odor going even after showering? I would not rule it out without testing. Just my two cents...

Gabby, I dont know if thats true, soap works fine, do you mean that if you use low pH soap the TMA stays in an odourless form on the skin for longer than if you use a neutral or high pH soap?

I dont know exactly what the question is? TMA is a high ph, low or neutral ph soaps neutralize TMA where it can be washed off. You can wash with high ph soaps all you want and it does not help at all. At least this had been my experience.

Re: fao tmau pls answer
Hi Pupung,
One of my sons and I are still waiting for our TMAU test results, so we have not been diagnosed, but based on the fact that we know that our odor is very much triggered by TMA-rich foods and choline, we might have it. I must say that no one in my family, even those who suffer from extreme body odor, has uncontrollable underarm odor, or groin area odor. That is not to say that if we don't use deodorant, we don't get underarm odor - we do quite strongly without deodorant. We use regular deodorants (once a day after washing) like Arm and Hammer, Ban, and only my older son uses AridXX, though I don't think he really needs it. We do use a high pH deodorant soap for under the arms only, and a low pH or pH balanced soap for the rest of the body, and it works pretty well as long as we stay on the low choline diet. The diet is what throws our control level totally out the window.
However, I have read a few articles written by experts that say that bromhidrosis has a genetic factor, and TMAU may also have a genetic factor, though not necessarily the same gene. Also, scientists really don't know much at all about other genetic factor in other types of body odor conditions. Nonetheless, there is a possibility that most sufferers have more than one source of body odor, whether it is microbial, involving more than one metabolic enzyme (probably of the FMO3 family), and/or have more than one gene mutation of some sort.
So, if a sufferer is unlucky enough to have multiple causes of body odor, the TMAU test is most certainly not sufficient. Perhaps the TMAU treatment may result in a decrease in TMA, but if other conditions exist, the odor may just change a little into a different type of odor, or even the intensity may decrease, but the sufferer would not end up odor-free without diagnosing and treating the other body odor conditions. This is why it's important to promote TMAU testing equally as much as promoting research into other types of body odor conditions - to identify and treat them.
