Here are my test results that I had received a while back ago. I wanted to put them here in the appropriate thread.
TMA = 1.1 umole/mmolecreat TMAO = 19.9 umole/mmole creat %TMAO = 94.6%
Normals (pre-choline load): TMA = 0.12-2.10 umole/mmole creatinine TMAO = 9.0-244 umole/mmole creatinine %TMAO = > 85%
I would really, REALLY appreciate any feedback. I'm worried about the second value (19.9).

I forgot to mention that I did not have a choline load before the test.

Hi Paige, I am a bit foxed by the reference range because the range I am used to is totally different from the Normals you have quoted. This is the reference range (normals) I am used to:- TMA: 1.5 - 11.0 micromol/mmol creat TMAO: 17.0 - 147.0 micromol/mmol creat TMA/TMAO: (0.01 - 0.21) Anyway, let me interpret the results based on the ranges you have been quoted:- TMA = 1.1 umole/mmolecreat TMAO = 19.9 umole/mmole creat %TMAO = 94.6% Normals (pre-choline load): TMA = 0.12-2.10 umole/mmole creatinine TMAO = 9.0-244 umole/mmole creatinine %TMAO = > 85% You said:- I would really, REALLY appreciate any feedback. I'm worried about the second value (19.9). Well, your TMAO is well within range. It is not high, perhaps because you didn't have a choline load. Your TMA value is well within range suggesting you don't have secondary tmau Your percentage TMA oxidised is nearly 95% which is perfectly normal. People with primary TMAU would only be able to oxidise up to 85% at best. I would say these results are Normal and don't show any evidence of TMAU. However, since you didn't have a choline load we can't be sure of the value of these results. This is because the FM03 enzyme may not have been challenged adequately. What did you eat for breakfast? How long ago was this test done? Did you get any Comments with your results? Were the comments similar to mine?

Hello Arun. Thanks for your interpretation. It's a little strange about the difference in values, though. I cannot remember what I had for breakfast exactly, but I may have had chicken for lunch. Although I didn't load up on choline, I wasn't restricting it. The results didn't provide any commentary whatsoever. I'm going to re-test with a choline load soon. I'm curious, is there any way of knowing, based on these results, how much they will change after a load? I have no idea if they might change a little or if the numbers would be completely different (for example, the 95% oxidation dropping to as low as, say, seventy or eighty-something percent). If you have no idea, that's fine. I just have very little understanding of this type of test.

My results: Trimethylamine (TMA) 15.4 TMA-n-Oxide 49.6 TMA/TMA-n-Oxide 0.31 Urine creatinine 7.0
I did the choline load beforehand, however three weeks before I was treated with a kidney infection with an antibotic, my urine sample was sent off but came back absolutely clear ruling out an urinary tract infection. I can't help but think did this antibotic perhaps lower my figures. The above according to Dr Manning is indicative of Primary TMAU1 but my symptoms didn't present themselves until I was 23/24, the only thing was my mother said as a baby when she changed my nappy I had strong smelling urine and had a number of kidney infections when I was smaller. I think stress is the major force behind my TMAU, as it only happens at work never at home more so than diet but I could be wrong, mine is the intermittment variety.

Hey I posted my tmau results under the name of carebear a few weeks ago, is there anyone out there who has tested postive for TMAU1 with their urine sample but their blood sample has not showed up any genetic deficiency, I am just wondering whether to get the blood test done as treatment for both types appears to be the same and I have already spent a fortune on products for tmau. If anyone wants to take a look at my results and offer any feedback i would appreciate it. Thanks!!!!

Can anyone please interpret these results, would be greatly appreciated!
*Urine Creatinine 7.50 mmol/L *Trimetlyamine (TMA) 21.1 umol/mmol creat (2.5-10.9) *TMA-n-Oxide 63.5 umol/mmol creat (17.0-147.0) *TMA/TMA-n-Oxide 0.33 (0.05-0.21)

Hi Carebear/Bubbles, I'm sorry your posts have been 'ignored'-that's the way it goes sometimes! As for me, I have finally convinced my doctor to book me an appointment with Dr Lachman (I've communicated with him via emails before but never met him!), so I'll get all the answers I need: you can't beat seeing a metabolic disorder specialist!! So, I was wondering if you could be put in touch with him too? If you have a positive tmau diagnosis, you should tell your GP that you need to be 'treated' by Dr Lachman... All the best Bethany

Hi, I have a referral to Dr Lachmann just haven't sent it off as waiting till after Christmas as it just such an expensive time, that to fly off to London in the middle of it would just be too much, have had it about 2 months or more but my Gp won't send me via NHS I have to pay privately to go even with a positive urine sample so will send it maybe end of this month and get to see him mid January if I am lucky. It would be great if someone could make some comments about my results, i have been checking but I know what a busy time it is so maybe someone might write something up over the holidays!!! I have spoken to him over email and he seems really nice so that's something at least!!!

Hi Carebear, Bubbles etc, Don't worry, I haven't forgotten this section! Things have just been very busy for me lately as I started a new job on 5th December. I will have plenty of free time over the XMas week so will look at this section then and will post my interpretations. If anyone else wants similar advice, do post your results here now but please note that I do all the interpretations once a month in a block due to time commitments. Arun

Oh dear, sorry to hear that you have to pay for your consultation with Dr Lachman. It must be due to the fact that you don't live in London (?). I know that some people in London have had regular visits with him, without having to pay. It's just not fair, is it? Is there not a way of making a complaint to the NHS care trust/Ombudsman (I'm sorry I'm just making wild guesses!)?. Could you write to your MP and explain your emotional and financial situation? I know that I personally would fight hard for a free consultation: as I said to my doctor, do they not realise that thousands of £ were 'wasted on me' as I saw numerous ENT consultants, gastroenterologist, had scans, endoscopies, etc, etc. Tell them that if you saw Dr Lachman, it will stop you from having other unnecessary tests... Anyway, good luck to you!
Hi Arun, I remember on the old site there were at least 2 other people who regularly gave their interpretation on test results! I wish they were still around as it would be 'less work' for you! Anyway, you only have to interpret carebear (or Bubbles!)'s results as I now know about mine. Thanks

Hi Carebear/Bubbles, Sorry it has taken me so long to get round to looking at your results. I started a new job at the start of the month so put my postings on a back burner.
Anyway, here is my interpretation of your results:-
The 'normal' range is as follows:-
TMA: 1.5 - 11.0 micromol/mmol creat TMAO: 17.0 - 147.0 micromol/mmol creat TMA/TMAO: (0.01 - 0.21)
Your results are:- Trimethylamine (TMA) 15.4 and this is a little above normal TMA-n-Oxide 49.6 this is within range TMA/TMA-n-Oxide 0.31 is abnormal suggesting primary TMAU Urine creatinine 7.0
It is the TMA/TMA-n-Oxide ratio which is important and this is definitely abnormal in your case. I think you should get the genetic test performed to be sure that it is infact Primary TMAU.
Also, I think you should get a retest done 6 months after the original just so that we can say that this result was not a fluke.
Carebear, how do you know you had a kidney infection 3 weeks before the TMAU test? Was there blood in your urine? Did you get an Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP) performed? Have you had a history of kidney disease? Arun

Hello Arun, I had a kidney infection about three weeks prior to testing , blood and protein showed up in my urine, my urine was sent away for further tests and my GP got back to me with these findings and stated that there was absolutely no UTI, I talked to Nigel Manning about this and he said then it was safe to assume it was TMAU. I was given a three day antibiotic for this which i took three weeks prior to my TMAU test so i am wondering would this have lowered my figures. In the past I have been diagnosed with OCD relating to me thinking I smelt badly and too many embarrassing incidences occurred for this to be all in my head and so fed up with getting nowhere fast after years of looking for answers, I stumbled across TMAU when researching and so many things clicked, the description of odour, etc that i am sure my test results were not a fluke. Diet has helped but I think stress plays a major role in triggering my symptoms which seem to occur nearly always in the workplace. Although I seem to be very vulnerable in the week leading up to my period. I have asked about when i was younger and my mum said I had very strong smelling urine (compared to my other siblings) as a child and had kidney infections for a while when I was two or three. I noticed that when I took medicine for OCD and seizures (tegretol) which my doctors think was as a result of taking the clomprimaine for OCD I think the odour got worse. I don't think OCD is the problem, i think what I had may have started off as this but that worry and stress and anxiety has affected my metabolism in some way or possibly made a reduction in my Fm03 enzyme if it is the genetic form worse. I starting suffering from anxiety, stress, social phobia from about 18 and I would say i started to notice comments re odour in my early twenties (22 on-wards) Arun i would be happy to private message you with my personal story if that would help any.

Arun, I do not have a history of kidney disease and have not had an infection since I was a child however I have always had strong smelling urine and do to this day perhaps not as bad now i am on the low choline diet and supplements however it has returned somewhat as I have majorly relaxed my diet over the festive period. All the best for the New Year.

Hi Carebear, The course of antibiotics you had would only affect your results if you had secondary TMAU whereas your results suggest primary.
You could PM me if you like. However, I am trying to get everyone to add me on Skype since I think our group needs more interaction.
Skype is free to download and my Skype ID is ArunNagrath so please add me and we can chat some time.
That applies to everyone else in the Group. I am planning to replace this Group with a Skype Group so we can all chat with each other whenever we need support. Arun
