No-Sugar Diet
I just wanted to re-post this information for the new people coming on board, and hope it helps.
Fructose and other sugars are metabolized by the liver enzymes called Aldolase. When we think of sugar we think sweet - but that’s not always the case. There is a type of sugar in red meats and milk called Sialic Acid, and the monosaccharide sugars are also metabolized by the Aldolase liver enzymes.
I was doing great on the low-sugars diet and then started taking a new medication for an ulcer called Sucralfate. After about a week, the odor flared up and it took me another week to start suspecting the medication. I called the pharmacy to see if the ingredients contained any sugars. The pharmacist at first said no but then I asked about monosaccharides. She looked it up and discovered that Sucralfate IS a monosaccharide sugar, hence the bad reaction.
Below is a diet plan for those of you who want to try a no-sugar diet and see if this is your problem also. If you do the diet, please post your results. If you are diabetic, hypoglycemic or have other medical problems, check with your doctor before starting this diet.
For the first 4 weeks OR until you get complete odor relief, eat/drink as much as possible from the list below:
Aspartame sweetener (hard to find pure aspartame - don’t use aspartame mixed with other sugars) (DO NOT USE SPLENDA)
Oats (plain-add your own sweetener, butter)
Sugar free breads, tortillas, crackers or wafers (don’t’ overeat wheat products; wheat also contains some fructose)
Sugar free cereals like Shredded Wheat (ALWAYS CHECK INGREDIENTS OF PROCESSED FOODS)
Pasta (no sauces - just coat with olive oil and salt to taste)
Spinach, turnip greens, mustard greens, green beans, wax beans, green and black olives
Chicken (no lunch meats or hot dogs)
Turkey (also, no lunch meats or hot dogs)
Egg whites
Butter/margarine in moderation
Olive Oil, Canola oil
Take a Calcium supplement with vitamin D, like Nature’s Bounty, that is sugar free. This diet is very low in calcium. Also, take a good sugar free multi-vitamin if you can.
Citrus fruits are the lowest in sugars of the fruits, so for the sake of nutrition, a small orange, tangerine, ½ grapefruit, lemon or lime no more than once a day would be best.
Use non-dairy creamer sparingly
Aspartame
Coffee
Tea (No herbal teas at this time; most herbal teas contain fructose)
Diet colas
Flour
Cocoa powder
Salt and pepper, but no other spices at this time
Best wishes to all of you!

Re: No-Sugar Diet
I have suspected my odour my come from sugar for a while, but your diet seems to go completely against the low choline diet advice? It says that sugar is low in choline can all get abit confusing lol

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Adrian, yes, it can be confusing, especially when people post conflicting information right behind me. The low-sugar diet excludes high choline foods until the odor is gone, then high choline foods like egg yolks and fish can be added. This is because there may be a cross over reaction that causes a person who cannot digest sugars also cannot digest high choline until the sugars are out of the system. It works for me, and seems to be working for others, but you have to be patient and give it a few weeks.
Staynup4, the odors I had (and have if I eat sugars) vary between fishy to just funky. It can be different parts of the body or all over, depending on what I eat or drink and how much.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Lisa, I find your theory very interesting. In my quest to find out what was wrong with me I did a lot of tests and they came up with fructose malabsorption and my doc. said I had trouble digesting sugars! I think it might be easier to cut out sugars than all the high-choline, sulpher, carnitine, whatever of the low-choline diet.
I am really considering giving your diet a try. But I'm afraid my trial won't be able to be scrutinized because I can't smell myself, but I can watch for reactions, I guess. I'm thinking I could put some nice perfume on and see what happens. People actually used to say, "mmm, you smell good," before all this!
I do have some questions about the diet. It seems a "little" restricting. I'm not complaining! Would white rice be okay and green peppers, tomatoes, zuchini or rice milk with the cereal? I'm a little concerned about the "Spinach, turnip greens, mustard greens, green beans, wax beans" because I "think" they're high in choline and I'm just looking for what I can eat. Thanks for your input!

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Hi Wendycori,
Yes, the diet is very restrictive at first to get sugars out of the system, then you can add more low sugar foods as you go. However, since you are unable to smell yourself it may be hard for you. About the rice and other foods, since you have been diagnosed with Fructose Malabsorption then you should do a careful search of foods high in fructose and fructose-type sugars. There's lots of good information on FM diets. Also, leave out red meats and dairy as much as possible. Dairy is my weakness, so when I have to cheat, I like a sugar-free chocolate mouse or sugar-free ice cream. It doesn't seem to be AS bad as the regular.

Lisa, Thanks for the info! So what do you think about eating some of those vegetables I mentioned, green peppers, tomatoes, zuchini, celery, and white rice??? Did you eat them? I try as hard as I can to eat healthy vegetables!!! Thanks again!

Re: No-Sugar Diet
No, I don't eat those foods because they are all high in fructose. Not only do I get BO, I also get gas and sometimes diarrhea from eating those vegetables. Red meats don't usually cause me gas, but do cause bad odor but that's because I can't digest the sugar in red meats and dairy (Sialic Acid), but it's the fructose that also causes me to have BO plus IBS symptoms, like gas, bloating and diarrhea. The green vegetables I mentioned are very healthy for you, especially turnip greens and spinach. Don't worry about the choline if you are not eating sugars.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
hi lisa just wondering ahve you been diagnosed with tmau? I just asked because I havent been tested yet and what you say about sugar really interests me because I have thought for a while that sugar is a cause of my odour even though I can't smell myself.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
I was tested for TMAU in 2000 and it was negative. The low choline diet helped me a great deal, so for a long time I assumed that I had a false negative test result, but now I know it's because the diet excludes red meats, most dairy and processed foods containing High Fructose Corn Syrup, so the diet was actually low in sugars also.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Lisa - Can you have stevia? I'm on a low sugar diet too, but my naturopath said that stevia and xylitol are ok because they are all natural and don't raise the blood glucose. Xylitol causes me some gas and loose bm's, so I don't use it.
Yesterday, I was craving something sweet, and made my self a sort of ice cream with a ripe avacado, some organic kefir and raw cocoa powder. I put all that in the blender with some stevia and it was really good. I know you aren't eating dairy, so maybe some plain coconut yogurt or unsweetened coconut milk would be a good substitute.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Hi Fritzy,
Stevia gives me cramps and diarrhea and Xylitol does too, so you have to go easy on both. There is a warning on Xylitol package that says it has a natural laxative effect, so it probably does that to most people. I don't have avocado, coconut milk or yogurt because they are all high in sugars. I make a cupcake with flour, xylitol, egg whites, olive oil and cocoa, and put butter on top after it's cooked. It's not the best cupcake, but it sure beats nothing when I'm craving something sweet!

Hi Lisa,
I was just wondering if you can post your cupcake recipe for us? I love to bake, so I'm trying to come up with a pie recipe that's very low in choline. Do you know how much butter you consume in one day or in one meal? I see you are not able to eat most fruits. A chicken pot pie is always filling, so that's an idea, minus the carrots and potatoes. Anyway, I'd love to try your recipe if you don't mind posting it.
Best wishes,
Cynthia

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Cynthia, I am happy to share this recipe. I put butter on my toast (sugar-free wheat bread) and on the cup cakes I have occassionally and it doesn't bother me at all, but I don't consume large amounts of butter every day.
Here's the cup cake recipe:
4 tablespoons flour
Xylitol equal to 6 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
2 whole eggs or 3 egg whites
3 tablespoons olive oil
small splash vanilla extract
Add dry ingredients and mix well, add eggs, oil and vanilla and mix well. If the batter is too thick, add a tablespoon of water. Spray a cupcake pan with olive oil non-stick spray and pour in batter (makes about 3 or 4 cupcakes). Cook at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes or until done. Top with a little butter, or if you want to try your own chocolate icing, try mixing cocoa with butter and Xylitol, but remember the laxative effect Xylitol has!
P.S. I would love to have your chicken pot pie recipe!

Hi lisa,
I'm the gathering ingredients to try the cupcakes this weekend. I'll try out the icing too... you can't go wrong with butter. Also, I'll come up with a chicken pot pie recipe using only the foods on your list. Do you eat herbs at all?
Thanks for sharing!

Hi, Lisa
I started the low sugar diet this week, i have a couple of questions
do you eat pork and foods with high carbs like potatoes and grains which turn into sugar easily ...... also is this diet a life style change or is it temporary until your body is able to process sugar.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Brie,
I went on a no-sugar diet about 3 years ago. I did it harshly for 3 months then I reintroduced sugar slowly into my diet. I lost too much weight and was very skinny but I didn't care, I was desperate.
I haven't smelled as strongly since then. Though I still have stronger odor than average, it is controllable with deodorant.
Though I don't know if I had candida or not, I used anti-candida diets I found on the internet. (They restrict sugar.) After 3 months, I started slowly reintroducing sugar and didn't find any reason to stop. Right now I eat a lot of sugary stuff. If I notice the smell getting worse again, restricting sugar will be the first thing I'll do.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Hi Brei and Yolievrdrmn,
Those of us who cannot digest sugars will probably never be able to digest them due to the lack or dysfunction of a liver enzyme called Aldolase. It's not just table sugars, it's red meats like beef and pork, venison, dairy foods and drinks, fructose in fruits and many vegetables that we cannot digest. Even medications and supplements can contain sugars that we cannot digest, which includes monosaccharides. I can eat whole wheat and other grains as long as there are no sugars added. I can eat pasta, but without sauce, crackers and breads without sugar.
Yolievrdrmn, if you eat pasta, flour coated chicken fried (or baked) in olive oil, toast with butter, etc. hopefully you will not lose weight.

Hi Yolievrdrmn and Lisa,
Yolievrdrmn are you saying you no longer have body odor and that you just smell sweaty?... I would much rather smell sweaty than smell like i stepped in dog poo(which is how i smell)... So going on the diet helped you manage your body odor.
Lisa, can you tell me why pork is on the avoid list and also do you drink diet cola, I read somewhere that the caramel color in diet cola is burnt sugar.. i so love my diet dr pepper.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Brei, pork as well as beef contains a type of sugar called Sialic Acid that is digested by the Aldolase liver enzymes, so that's why it causes a bad reaction. You can drink all the diet Dr. Pepper you want!!! Asparame sweetener, although not being good for us, is not digested by the Aldolase liver enzymes, so it doesn't cause a problem. I don't think caramel color is made by burnt sugar.
Manny, if you do the no-sugar diet and it works for you then gradually you should be able to start smelling yourself.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Lisa, do you have any issues with chicken or turkey for the past week i have only been eating chicken and turkey and nothing else. .... i am getting some really bad reactions from people ....I used to be a vegan so maybe my body is not used to digesting meat.
I know that sugar is my main problem because before i started smelling like rotten garbage and fecal i would get really bad breath and a strong sweaty smell if i ate sweets or dairy.
I don't eat fruit because the smell is so bad even i smell it and i am one of the suffers who can't smell my odor.
Now it seems like everything is causing a odor i can't eat wheat i went gluten free for a month and my odor went down about 70% but i still had blow ups, (blow ups is the smell that happens all of a sudden and disappear seconds later and is the worse smell ever)... my 11 year old named it that (poor kid).
I am going to stick to the diet because i know sugar is a major problem for me.... the hardest part is finding things i can eat i am afraid of fruit, high sugar veggies like tomatoes and corn and high carbs foods that turn into sugar like potatoes.
My diet will consist of tofu, rice, millet, quinoa ,green leafy veggies like kale, greens and spinach, yellow squash, bell peppers, green beans and i will try to eat nuts i know in the past nuts also made me smell funny not fecal more like a chemical smell.... is there anything on here i should avoid.
Lisa, can this Aldolase liver enzymes defect run in families because my son gets horrible bad breath when he overdo processed sweets,no amount of brushing his teeth will get rid of the smell it has to wear off in a couple of days.... he can eat all the fruit he wants.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Hi Brei, I'm not sure I understand. Are you only eating chicken and turkey and nothing else? You're diet has to be balanced. Go back to the plan and create a more balanced diet for yourself. Plus, the first week you may experience a worsening of the odor a bit and then it dies back down and should keep going, but it takes a few weeks, so patience is needed. I'm not sure if it's inherited because biomolecular research on Aldolase deficiency hasn't been done yet, but I'm working on it.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Hi Lisa, we were finally able to make the chocolate cupcakes last night. I had trouble finding Xylitol, had to go to a health food store. I doubled the recipe, we made cupcakes and cookies out of the batter. The cookies kind of reminded of an ice cream sandwich cookie. I baked the cookies on parchment paper so they wouldn't stick. My seven year old thought the cupcakes were delicious. I'll pm you the recipe for the chicken pot pie as soon as I get everything together. Thanks for sharing
Cynthia
I almost forgot-we made the icing also-very good.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
I'm slowly getting there, not completely sugar free. My over all odor has been low this week but my underarm odor has been horrible. I've been eating a few saltine crackers each day. I read the ingredients this morning, they have corn syrup. Why on earth do crackers have to have sugar??? I can't get over some of the junk that's in food anymore. It's time to take another trip to the health food store. I've been wondering about coffee, I have one cup in the morning. Do you think it bothers you at all? Do you drink coffee every day?
Thanks.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Hey Cynthia,
Don't worry, it takes time for the sugars to get out of your system. I have noticed my odor undergoes changes as it dies out.
Also, I was going to tell you that I found some information about Xylitol, and that it may not be good for us in large amounts. Also, no Splenda or Stevia. A web site recommends a sweetener called Sweet One instead. You can order it online at sweetone.com. I did notice an odorous reaction after eating 2 choc cupcakes a few days ago, so I'm going to try Sweet One and see if that works. I can't drink coffee much because I have an ulcer, but it doesn't cause me odor unless I put sugar in it.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Okay Lisa, thanks, I'll finish what I have then look for the Sweet One.
The true test will be when the weather turns cold, that's when my odor is at it's worst.
Do you cause people to have allergic reactions? I cause people to cough and sniffle. Over the weekend, I was around someone that said they felt like they couldn't breathe. Also, I was reading to my son last night before we went to bed and he said the same thing. It's definitely devastating, I just hope I'm not causing this. Sorry to bombard you with so many questions.
Thanks

Hey Cynthia,
Since being on the no-sugar diet I have not had those reactions unless I cheat really bad. Then it takes days for the odor to die back down again, just from one bad meal or snack, so I'm really trying hard not to cheat.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Hi Brei,
I have not tried Sweet One sweetener, but it was recommended on a web site for those with Fructose Malabsorption. I have noticed that I do get somewhat of a reaction from Xylitol and then I learned it's not highly recommended for FM. My odor is completely gone when I stick to the no sugar diet. The no sugar diet also includes no red meat or dairy. Red meat and dairy contains a type of sugar called Sialic Acid, which is metabolized by the same enzyme that metabolizes fructose. I have found a doctor that is researching in this area, so hopefully we will have answers in the future. You can order Sweet One sweetener from sweetone.com.

Hi Lisa

Hi guys,
Well here i am three years on, and admittedly i had some results on my blog, but not the results i was exactly looking for. The smell would return on eating carbs or sugary foods. But don't stress because i recently found out the reason for this and i have the tests to prove this. I finally found a doctor who found my problem ( probably yours too).My doctor has treated this problem many times in the past with success. Now there are a combination of things causing this problem. My doctor found out that my pancreas is unable to digest sucrose (sugars) and lactose (milk sugars). We found this by doing a blood glucose test where you have one blood test then drink a sugary drink, then take another blood test an hour later then a third test two hours after consumming the drink. Strangley my blood sugar levels dropped. Which was the alarm bell to my doctor. My doctor is an extremely competent gastro/liver doctor. The reason the smell emits from the body is becasue undigested sugars ferment in the intestines and feed bad bacteria. Once the bad bacteria feeds on the undigested sugars the waste byproducts from te bacteria is absorbed through the walls of the intestines into the blood, where is pushes out the skin in the form of a fart smell, bad odour etc. I found out all this at the end of May this year, and so far his program seems to be working. Here is the thing the will scare a lot of you, as it did at first with me. You will need to take an extensive program of antibiotics for a period of 6 months. I have a daily antibiotic which i take daily, and 3 different strong ones which take on a saturday only. I take one lot (3 or 4 tablets over a day) on the saturday then i take a second one on te saturday then the third on the folllowing saturday. keep roating them until all gone.He is not a cowboy though. He has me on a super strong probiotic every night (VSL#3). Also taking a liquid multivitamin and folic acid tablet. we found out my immune system wasnt good, low red blood cells and someting else was low which i forget. I also take 4 pancreatic enzymes with every meal. they are callled Creon and are a prescription pancreatic enzyme. good cos much cheaper than all the natural meds that you are wasting your money on like i did. I got noticable improvements to my health prety quickly. colour in face came back straight away and my hair growing thicker again. More energy and bowel movements finally improving. I have fallen off the wagon eating some sugary stuff and a lot of foods i would not dare to touch on the candida diet and have only a few relapses. The doctor confirmed my bodys healing very well as he did a number of tests both stool and blood etc which he was very happy with. Says the smell will still happen if eat the bad food but will get less and less until it is gone for good. I have more test again in 3 weeks, these will be my 5 months tests and will show me if the body is still on the right track. I then have more tests in another 6 months. I like it that everything is measurable with th doctor. The natural method is doable to get better, but in my opinion with a faulty pancreas you wil eat the trouble food which will not digest and the problem will return. I reckon the chances of beating it this way are slim to nil. maybe 5%. I only know one person who overcame it properly. Eating healthy is great. But i think the way to beat this is through a mainstream doctor even my mate who is a qualfified herbalist agrees. There are times when mainstream meds are needed/ ours is one. just make sure you pump in the probiotics. Anyhow i felt i had an obligation to do my part and make sure you guys are aware of my findings. Anxiety still exists, but thats normal when you suffer from this ###### for 6 years. It does get better abd im doing a lot more stuff now than i would of dreamt of in the past. peace guys. be happy you will get there one day. i still check my email occasionally at beatleakygas@gmail.com . If you get the blood sugar test done, let me know your results. There are a lot of $$$$$$ed doctor around, but as i have found there are some who are worth there weight in gold. have faith. seeya guys. ps he says withthe bacteria problem gone and the good bacteria in check the pancreas should return to normal in time and you can eventually get off the pancreatic enzymes. cpuld someone please copy and paste htis message on the other forums. Ps dont spend all day on these forums. Deffinately the worst thing you can do.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Brei, I read the post all the way through and absolutely disagree with this information. The so-called proof is not proof - it is theory, on the part of the doctor and the patient. I have been down that road of pancreatic enzymes many years ago, and that was not it. If you read up on Fructose Malabsorption, you will see that hypoglycemia (low-blood sugar) is a common symptom. There are many different chemical reactions that go on in the metabolism of foods, and different organs are involved in this process. Taking antibiotics is NOT necessary to get this problem under control. I am living proof of that. You do have to have a proper diet. That's the hardest part for all of us, sticking to the diet. It is very restrictive.

I think everyone is a little different with what they can eat and not eat i can not eat meat not even chicken or turkey, wheat and even fruit i can't eat none of the above i have tried to eliminate meat and just eat vegan, but i can't do that because most vegetarian foods contain wheat gluten and which makes me smell..... my thoughts on posting my previous message was asking the question could i also have sibo(small intestinal bacteria overgrowth) from sugar and carbs not being processed and feeding a bacteria overgrowth.
I agree with you about the sugar being the major problem because as soon as i eat something sweet whether it is fruit or something with sugar in it like salad dressing i start smelling immediately... I think i have sugar malabsorption along with hostile intestinal bacteria.
The reason i have questions about overgrowth of bacteria is because i can not eat high carbs like potatoes and corn i smell like i just ate a whole cake which is not pleasant....my smell can range from garbage to fecal and sometimes fishy... it will start in my breath before it becomes full blown body odor.
Do you think taking a natural antibiotic would help me along with the sugar free diet. I agree with you about prescribed antibiotics i think sometimes they cause more harm than good if taken too long, but that is just my personal opinion.
Thanks, Lisa i really appreciate you taking the time to help and tell us what worked for you.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Hi lisa, I was tested negative for TMAU last week I noticed that even when I tried the low choline diet that my odour got much worse. I think this could have been because I was eating alot of tomatoes almost 3 times a day. I was also eating alot of white rice and pasta. And some oven chips.
I have decided to give your no-sugar diet a try. I was wondering If you could answer a few questions for me.
1. is butter ok?
2. As I have tested negative for tmau (my FMo-3 count is very normal) do I need to keave out the high choline foods for the first four weeks?
3. do I also have to worry about my sucrose in take?
Thanks

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Good idea, Adrian. The worse that could happen is that it won't work, and then you'll also rule this out as a problem. The best that could happen is that it controls your odor and then you'll know that this was a cause of your odor problem.
It's better to try different things, one at a time, when modern medicine has no other recourse for you to take; so, it's up to us to try one thing at a time. I say only one thing at a time in order to have some control over the self-help trial so that you can make sense of the results.
BEST WISHES TO YOU!
María

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Is this something you think you've always had or is it something that's come about?
Hey Wendycori,
I think it may be a combination of both. Right now it's just a theory, but am working on getting approved for a research program that will hopefully answer those questions.
Re: No-Sugar Diet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brei, there are blood tests to find out if you have celiac disease - the inability to digest gluten. If the test is negative, then it may not be the problem. The sugars in our foods can be hidden. I used to believe coffee caused me to have odor, but now realize it is the cream and sugar I was putting in the coffee that causes the odor. I tried taking cod liver oil one time, and ended up smelling like dead fish! I thought it was the fish oil. It turns out it was the lemon flavoring in the oil to disguise the taste that caused the problem. I can plain fish oil now with no problems. So, can you see the difference? Sometimes it's best to reject all previous notions about what you think it is, and just start over.
1. is butter ok? YES, IN MODERATION
2. As I have tested negative for tmau (my FMo-3 count is very normal) do I need to keave out the high choline foods for the first four weeks? YOU CAN IF YOU CHOOSE, BUT IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER THAT MUCH. AS LONG AS YOU REFRAIN FROM SUGARS, FRUCTOSE, RED MEATS AND DAIRY. I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO DO THEIR OWN RESEARCH REGARDING WHAT FOODS ARE HIGH IN FRUCTOSE. YOU WILL SEE THAT TOMATOES ARE LIKE A FRUIT, THEY ARE VERY HIGH IN FRUCTOSE.
3. do I also have to worry about my sucrose in take? YES!!! SUCROSE CANNOT BE TOLERATED BY PEOPLE WITH FRUCTOSE MALABSORPTION.
Thanks YOUR WELCOME!!!

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Hi, Lisa
You are a life saver, I read the back of some of my veggie burgers the listing for the nutrition had 0 sugars, but when i read the ingredients the 8th or 9th ingredient was sugar... how can you label a product 0 sugar when sugar is one of the ingredients.
Question, did you have sinus problems before you went sugar free... i have really bad sinus so i started taking apple cider vinegar for my sinus it seems to be working my nose is no longer congested ..... the odd thing is when i have to blow my nose i blow out nasal polyps. Last night i kept smelling something like spoiled food I checked the trash cans and even the refrigerator trying to find the smell , it was neither it was me... i know this sounds strange but i was really excited because i normally can not smell my odor i used to be able to in the beginning ....maybe sugar causes sinus or an allergy reaction. I read somewhere polyps are caused by inflammation from a sinus infection and can cause a loss or poor sense of smell.
Update on diet i have been sugar free for 2 weeks except for the sneaky sugar in veggie burgers.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Brei, that's great! You are definitely on your way to getting it under control! And you're figuring out the hidden sugars in processed foods. They also have some sneaky names for sugar too. The sugar alcohols especially, which is just concentrated sugars. I don't know about the nasal allergies and nose polyps though. I do have some allergies to dust, pollen, etc., but not related to the digestive disorder that I know of. I would get that checked out by your doctor if possible. hope you get to feeling better!
Also Brei, did you know soybeans are very high in fructose? All the starchy veges are.
Staynup4, my odor varied depending on what i eat/drink and how much. Different foods/drinks cause different odors. Everything from fishy to gasy, to a weird burnt smell to just funky b.o.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
THANK YOU Lisa and all others who posted! I find the no-sugar diet very helpful and also all others who have had this problem.
I'm afraid to say that I've had this odor problem for almost 2 years and after some painful social situations and frustration, and not being able to smell myself, I think I know where the problem lies-- too much sugar which, if I'm understanding it correctly, has impeded my ability to digest protein and other things. Now, I will bring this concern to my doctor and will hopefully be tested for sugar/ lactose intolerance.
The only thing I was eventually aware of was the fact that this is a dietary adjustment, but had no idea where to begin. I really thought that this problem was due to the protein. Granted, meat eaters, for example, do emit a stronger odor than vegetarians or vegans, but my odor was extreme, and it seemed to happen overnight. I know this because like many of you, I got terrible and at times, very cruel reactions from co-workers. It's so unfortunate that they were so ignorant and quite nasty to me. However, my thought was that god forbid, if this happened to their child or their spouse or their parents, these same people may be more compassionate. It's a shame that the type of relationship matters instead of being compassionate to others as a human being.
Anyway, it didn't help that I couldn't smell myself, although, when the odor was at its height, I could smell a foul odor coming from the top of my head- (my husband could smell that too) which I think is because hair traps odor no matter where it is on your body. I also knew that it had to be mainly coming out of my pores from everywhere and was sweating out something impure.... especially when I had "Cheese-Its" -- big mistake!! I had no idea how I could permeate a room!!! It also didn't help that I had to endure 2 summers like this where my odor was accentuated by the weather and just normal situations where I would sweat like anyone else would- at the gym, for example, except my odor was worse than normal. I was afraid to go outside and knew I couldn't do any errands on lunchtime especially in the summer because my odor would be worse upon returning to the office... EVEN IF I walked slow and walked in the shade. The odor was apparently with me all the time and external forces just brought it out. I found that I couldn't wear perfume or even scented deodorant as it just made things worse. I didn't want to go to work and was depressed because of this.
This was such a slow process for me as it took me a while to even realize that the odor was from me, then trying to educate myself - (I now use Dr. Tom's aluminum-free deodorant) and make dietary changes kind of blindly as I didn't exactly know what to avoid except for the protein- but didn't know why or why this was happening to me.
Eliminating the protein was a big deal for me as my husband makes great chicken, pasta dishes with great spices. So not knowing what the problem was, I tried eating just veggies. This was difficult for me as i only really liked salad veggies and not any other veggies. So I didn't always adhere to it being that I was trying to like things I really didn't care for and the fact that I was feeling very deprived. All in all, I have to say that the dietary change to veggies did help to an extent. HOWEVER, what I found was that when I wanted to cheat, I thought I would just take a couple of enzyme pills (that I bought at Whole Foods) and figured that would cancel out the odor problem and help me digest. WRONG! So I had some chicken with limited/ no spices, or pizza, for example, but the pills didn't help. So I just plain cut out the meat protein, but still kept veggies in the picture, BUT remember I was also still eating pasta (which I'm now aware that was part of the problem), and still consumed a fair amount of sugar -- which now I really think this is the root of the problem. High sugar in my diet this whole time has prevented me from digesting protein and other nutrients that can't get to my body properly.
As far as my doctors, I have baffled them up till this point. The first doctor I went to remarked that she couldn't smell anything bad on me, and that if I found that veggies helped, then just change my diet. Case closed. As you can imagine, that did NOT help. I wanted to get to the root of this problem especially since it was so severe. I knew something wasn't right. So I proceeded having my thyroid check and monitored. I do have hyperthyroidism and have more recently gotten it under control with the right dosage of meds. I know that hyperthyroidism can increase heart rate, sweatiness, etc. which accentuate my odor problem, like the hot weather in the summer. I also knew it wasn't the root of the cause- which , at least the endocrinologist agreed with this. I had liver and kidney functions checked and monitored twice in the last year and a half - both which were normal. I was relieved about this but also at the same time, frustrated because I still didn't know the cause of this extreme odor.
Last weekend, I had more sugar than anything healthy and pretty much no protein. Had that strange odor again-- but since coming across this forum- I really think that being tested for sugar intolerance is worth being tested. I am relieved that at least now I may have an idea from where this may be coming from. I have fasted the last couple of days drinking plenty of water and trying to rid myself of the sugar. I am going to follow Lisa's no-sugar diet and incorporating veggies without doing the protein just yet. I think I would rather cut out sugars so that I can have protein back in my diet - with moderation of course. Then may sparingly incorporate sweets at a later time -- only with sugar substitutes, so that I don't feel deprived.
Sorry for such a long email, but I've never written about any of this before and never told a soul- only my husband, who is my biggest fan and has supported me so much through this awful ordeal. I welcome any comments/ suggestions.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Boo

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Everyone is different, so if a particular food does not cause you problems then by all means don't worry about it. I have found that if I eat fruits, vegetables, oats, pasta, egg whites, a little chicken or turkey (but no red meats) and drink lots of water I get the best results. That includes NOT consuming processed foods, sugars of any kind (except fruit), no gum, candies, sodas, dairy/whey, corn syrup/corn syrup solids, high fructose corn syrup, alcohol, or too much meat, etc.
I get the best results from eating/drinking that way, but who can stick with that for very long? Usually I can stick with it on the short term, especially if I have a special event coming up because it only takes a few days for me to get results IF I don't cheat. Hope this helps you all and if you have the self-control it takes and get good results, be sure to let us know. We all need the encouragement.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Yes, they are very much alike. Which is why I thought I had TMAU at one time (even though I tested negative for TMAU) because I got such good results on the low-choline diet. But sugar is not supposed to affect those with TMAU and I couldn't figure out why I would still get a bad reaction when I ate/drank something low in choline but high in sugar. I still think it's possible there may be a connection between the two disorders.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
I was diagnosed with TMAU a few years ago, and have followed a strict TMAU style diet, but still have odour. I cant really smell it, so have to go by others comments/reactions.
I had a very nutrient poor, high-sugar and dairy diet growing up. Doctors always denied sugar could cause any problems (other than tooth decay) but despite this, as an adult I decided that I would eat as little sugar and dairy as possible, to reduce stomach upsets and hopefully reduce the odour.
So I eat a low sugar, dairy, choline and TMA diet pretty much all the time, and at weekends I eat some dairy and sugar and know I will get more negative reactions because of this but have learned to accept the situation, because as you will know those dietry restrictions don’t leave much thats ‘safe’ to eat.
I had explained this to myself as my having an overgrowth of bugs, some of which are over producing TMA and some which are feeding off the sugar and dairy and producing abnormal levels of odour from that. Or maybe an overgrowth of candida. I tried testing for sugar malabsorption, but our UK health service doesn’t investigate that area well, and I couldn’t get a test from someone who actually believed in it.
I am inspired by your story to consider cutting out the dairy and sugar completely ie not cheating at weekends. The only thing thats stopping me is that I cant smell the odour very much myself, so Im reliant on others who aren’t necessarily around all the time or that reliable and consistent in their recording of the data. Its been hard enough giving up anything remotely tastey during week days but doing it full time is a massive undertaking. I’ll try.
Something that occurred to me about what you said about a possible lack of enzymes to break down the sugars....as I said I was brought up on a diet that was almost exclusively processed foods (ie hidden sugars), the red meats you mentioned, and out and out confection, cakes etc. – and I have always looked really malnourished and borderline underweight. There were others of my generation who were brought up on a similarly poor diet (even within my family) whose bodys are different, even slightly overweight. I wonder if I had trouble utilizing the sugars in the dairy, meat etc you mention so wasn’t getting much nutrition to grow, whereas others who had a similar diet were able to get the required calories from their poor diet? Is anyone else with this problem ‘naturally’ quite thin, even when they are eating whatever they like?
Thanks for the suggestion of the diet Lisa. Its good to have options to try, with some scientific basis to them!

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Hi Lisa,
I'm wondering if brown rice is safe on the low fructose diet.Have you had any problems with it?
I've been eating alot of brown rice since of late.
Oddly enough i bake alot especially when i visit my mom. I tend to binge on sugar on these occasions
Now that i think back i notice my odour increase on those occasions so i dont see ne harm in trying the low fructose
diet for a while.

I was tested for TMAU in 2000 and it was negative. The low choline diet helped me a great deal, so for a long time I assumed that I had a false negative test result, but now I know it's because the diet excludes red meats, most dairy and processed foods containing High Fructose Corn Syrup, so the diet was actually low in sugars also.

Re: No-Sugar Diet
Hi lisa,
I'm the gathering ingredients to try the cupcakes this weekend. I'll try out the icing too... you can't go wrong with butter. Also, I'll come up with a chicken pot pie recipe using only the foods on your list. Do you eat herbs at all?
Thanks for sharing!

Re: No-Sugar Diet

Lisa
Thanks for responding .....

María

These posts were very informative...Can the people who posted on this forum give an update on if the no sugar diet worked for them or not? I had no idea tomatoes might be a problem, I eat them almost everyday with avocados.
