Borrego Springs, California is a small town in the southern California desert with wide open spaces, cheap land, and plenty of room for housing to spread out. With under 4,000 population, a moderate climate and beautiful views of the desert, mountains, and nighttime stars it sounds like a perfect refuge. Also, the community caters to artists, musicians, and writers with cultural events and activities.
If you have the time to dream, check out the Chamber of Commerce website on Google and see what you think!
Also, Huell Howser did a show on Borrego Springs in his PBS series, "California's Gold". He described it as rather like Palm Springs, but much less expensive. Maybe it can be seen online--I'll get back to you on that.
