In that book I mentioned, A New IBs Solution, the doctor talked about a product which I think is really interesting. It's an American book so I'm not too sure can you get it in Europe. It's called Vivonex. Apparently the doctor who wrote the book says it's a foodstuff which contains all the nutrition you need but it's almost in a postdigested state so it's ideal for people whose digestive systems don't work properly. So for instance the protein in it is already broken down into it's constituent amino acids parts. He says that if you go on it for two weeks (he calls it the elemental diet) you will be able to kill the sibo in your gut as the bacteria there will be starved of any foodstuffs. The one drawback he mentions is that it is extremely expensive. I think this product sounds really interesting though I've learnt from experience things that sound too good to be true usually are. I wonder has anybody tried this or heard anything more about it. If it is as good as he says it isI think it would be a really big help to people on here who are going on very strict diets but maybe it's not all it's cracked up to be?

I googled "vivonex sibo" and a website about people who took vivonex popped up. One person mentioned that s/he had success with 3 weeks of vivonex and cipro which cured his/her IBS. For my case, cipro doesn't work for me at all. Perhaps 3 weeks of vivonex and 7 days of neomycin may work for some of us. Vivonex has been around for many years according to the posting date of the messages on that website. I think 3 weeks of vivonex and eating nothing else is tough...I wonder if we'll feel hungry all the time? Has anyone tried vivonex? Here is the link of the website for your reference: forum.lowcarber.org/archive/index.php/t-146840.html

Update - I did the Vivonex diet for 1 day and I smelled like a walking vitamin on the next day! I couldn't stand the smell and I stopped the diet. I guess there's too much vitamins/chemical/minerals being added to Vivonex and my body cannot handle it. However, I didn't feel hungry while I was on Vivonex. I will do the Vivonex diet again when I'm ready (i.e. no need to leave the house for 2 weeks).

Hey DCBA, Thanks a million for the update. That's a pity alright, hopefully your body just needs time to get used to it. I know how frustrating it can be, there's one or two things I want to try out but can't because i know it will just cause my odour to flare up at least in the sort term. It's good at least that you weren't hungry, it's a sign I suppose that it can be used long term. I don't think vivonex is available on this side of the atlantic but I'll definately ask my gastro the next time I see him is there something like it I can have. I'll definately let you know how I get on. All the very best for now

Hello all, sibo a little over 2 years ago after a bad case of food poisoning in Greece, followed by a year of stressful wedding planning which probably didn't help. I've been on 1wk/mo of flagyl/tetracyline, clarithromycin, and amoxicillan for 6 mo--no big improvement from these. 4 months later i tried 1 mo of xifaxin which helped and then 9 mo later 2 more months of xifaxin which again helped. I am on probiotics, vitamin D, fish oil and glutamine powder. When i feel really bad glutamine makes me feel a smidgeon better. I have sibo, leaky gut, and fructose/wheat intolerances. My dr. thinks the intolerances and leaky gut are just symptoms and will eventually go away as i get better. i'm on day 10 of trying vivonex plus and i actually feel a little better than i did prior to starting which is why i wanted to post. i take another breath test on wednesday, but regardless of what it shows i think i will do the vivonex for the full 3 wk period recommended by pimental. i take the vivonex w/o the aspartame packets and don't find it too terrible...kind of like crushed supplements in drink form. i drink it cold though and dilute it with some extra water. i'm usually pretty full off three of the packets but bought enough for 5 per day. i have some occassional cramping and next to no bowel movements, but other than that i don't have too many side effects. Burping was the original reason i went to the dr. and it's the reason i'm trying the vivonex as it's the problem that is still affecting me most.

Hi Kim, Nice to know that you're feeling better. I wonder if you have odor problem? My problem is odor and Vivonex made me smelled worse when I was on it.

i burp constantly and the burping makes my breath pretty awful. at my worst i didn't even go 2 min without a new burp and the pressure in my throat was awful. during this whole time it's been constant burping...i've never had a day without burping. i'm better than originally now, but the burping still majorly affects my life and i'm in grad school for public relations so i have to find a solution. the vivonex gives you bad breath and kind of coats your mouth which isn't super pleasant but at the same time neither is burping to the point of clearing out a room. i burp less on the vivonex and have felt slightly better although today i was kind of foggy, lightheaded, dizzy and had reflux. hopefully more die off. it's not an easy solution taking vivonex...but if it works, that's the most important thing and it seems to be having some kind of positive effect already. i know it's not the easiest solution, it seems like a lot of people have opted for other methods of treatment and i understand that. but if you have a point of time where you have some down time, it might be worth a try--i'm on winter break. i'll let you know how it goes, i'm on day 12 and starting to miss food, but i know the end goal is worth it.
